Review:
As an elementary library, I saw the I Survived series of books get checked out over and over by the boys (and sometimes girls) from 3rd - 6th grade. They loved this series with all of it's action packed survival and I liked that they were learning about history through the eyes of someone their own age who may have been in these events.
Fast forward a few years and my son was finally old enough to read the series. We were thrilled to discover that the series had graphic novels! Graphic novels are my son's second favorite way of consuming books (audiobooks being his preffered method). I let him pick out whichever book he wanted to start with, as the books are not linear, and was not surprised when he chose the one with the shark on the front.
As of the writing of this post, there are 15 graphi novel versions of the original series and I highly recommend them. We've read 2 of them and so far there has been no romance, no language, and very little in the way of 'heads-up' content. I will say, having the visuals to go along with some of these sad events might be difficult for some kids but my son appreciated getting to 'see' the events in this way and said the images made it more real for him.
