Our Review: A Boring Book Where Everything Happens
Sanderson has created such an interested little picture book. It is true that in most picture books, the pictures tell the story but in this case, the pictures exclusively tell the story. The text, which is purposefully boring, is there to mislead any listeners and to provide a humorous juxtaposition against the backdrop of the beautiful illustrations by Kazu Kibuishi that are absolutely not boring.
We really enjoyed this book! The humor works really well for its target audience (and older). As an aside, this could be a facinating study guide for younger students who want to get into writing. By reading the book before showing them the pictures, you can talk about adding 'imagery' to stories to make them interesting. Both literally through illustrations and figuratively through prose.
Possible Teaching Moments:
Critical Thinking Skills: We readers are being told a very simply version of events. But what's happening in the pictures is much better!
During the reading: Ask kids, "what is really happening?" to engage them with each different page.
Discussion: Have a conversation about whether or not this is considered lying, even though the narrator is telling us the basic truth.
Creativity: The boring task of sitting in the chair is made fun by the exciting images.
Discussion: How can we use our imagination to make things that are boring more fun?
Activity: Next time you clean up toys, have the kids imagine all sorts of things that could happen that would make it more interesting. Do the toys come to life and run away? Do they put themselves away Marry Poppin's style? Does a dragon swoop in and try to eat the toys?

"Listen, this book is boring. We're telling you it's boring. It's in the title of the book―in fact, it's THE MOST BORING BOOK EVER! And created by #1 New York Times bestsellers Brandon Sanderson and Kazu Kibuishi!
Don't peek behind the cover! Don't look at the pictures! And definitely don't follow along with the rip-roaring adventure the boy is experiencing. Stay focused on mundane things like sitting in chairs and doing homework. Any report of dragons or marauding airships is ridiculous! This book is BORING!" - From Amazon
