We love dinosaurs in this family. It's only a matter of time before we have a list of clean and/or safe for Christian readers list of dinosaur books for every age group (check out our Middle Grade list here). These are some of our favorite standalone picture books and picture book series with dinosaurs for the mini dino lover in your life!
This is a living post. Check back occasionally as we will continue to update this list.
How Do Dinosaurs...series by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague
This is a series (25 books) of social stories themed around Dinosaurs. By first modeling behavior that may not be so nice (Do they stop their feet and shout?), Jane can then have the dinosaurs model behavior that's better (No, Dinosaurs don't. They do this instead). This series is perfect for kids that may be struggling with manners, social norms, etc. who may be encouraged to 'act like a dinosaur.' My son absolutely loved them and I've had the pleasure of getting my nephew hooked on them.
Nibbles The Dinosaur Guide by Emma Yarlett
The Nibbles series (5 books) is about a book monster who gets loose and eats his way through numerous kinds of books while readers chase after him. Our favorite book is Nibbles the Dinosaur Guide where the book monster eats his way through a Dinosaur guide book. It's so much fun and getting to read facts about dinosaurs as you go along is a bonus! We really enjoy this interactive picture book.
The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth by Ellie Hattie
This is another 'chase a creature through a book while learning interesting facts' type of book. This time, we're helping a mammoth find his baby brother in a museum come to life. We really enjoyed opening flaps to check behind objects and learning about the museum pieces as we went along.
Penelope Rex Series by Ryan Higgins
The Penelope Rex series (6 books) is about an adorable little T-rex learning life lessons. In the first book, she learns how to make friends (by not eating them). In the second book, she finds her talent. In the third book she faces her fear of the class pet. In the fourth book she deals with a new cat (sabertooth tiger) and in the fifth book she learns the value of going potty before getting dressed to play in the snow. The sixth book is not yet out as of the time of writing this.
The Dinosaur That Pooped a Planet by Tom Fletcher
This book series (14 books) does not teach anything (beyond why you should remember to pack your lunch and feed your pet) but it's such a fun read. Each book has the dinosaur pooping something else. We only read the Pooped a Planet book but my son laughed out loud more than once. Might not be for kids who get squeamish around poop because it does show brown poop covering everything.
