When Calls the Heart by Janette Oke

When Calls the Heart by Janette Oke

For those familiar with the Hallmark Television show, this is not that. This book inspired the 2009 movie which inspired the tv show.

The main character is named Elizabeth and she does fall in love with a Mountie (named Wynn) and go west to teach but that is where the similarities with the show end. When Calls the Heart is a fantastic Christian Canadian Western book that reminds us to answer the call God has placed on our hearts, even if the way seems daunting. He'll see us through, if He's truly behind the call. I thought Elizabeth struggling with living in the west was humorous and though I wish there was more to the romance (they do not even talk until 50% into the book) I really enjoyed her learning to be independent and to help the children she'd been entrusted with. A really great read!

Nothing in her privileged eastern upbringing has prepared Elizabeth for the challenges of frontier life...

Elizabeth Thatcher is young, pretty, cultured, and educated. But when she journeys west to teach school in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, she's completely unprepared for the conditions she encounters. Still, she's determined to succeed at the formidable task of fitting in with the locals and shaping the hearts and minds of the schoolchildren in her care.

She's just as determined not to give her heart to any of the local frontiersmen. Until she meets Wynn Delaney, a member the Royal Canadian Mounted Police...
