Review
For those familiar with the Hallmark Television show, When Calls the Heart this is not that. This book inspired the 2009 movie which inspired the tv show. The main character is named Elizabeth and she does fall in love with a Mountie (named Wynn) and moves west to teach but that is where the similarities with the show end. There is no Jack Thorton in this series. But! If you are looking for the companion series to the show, check out our review of that trilogy here!
When Calls the Heart is a fantastic Christian Canadian Western historical fiction book with a dash of romance. It reminds us to answer the call God has placed on our hearts, even if the way seems daunting. He'll see us through, if He's truly behind the call. The books in this series are sequential so it's best if they are read in order.
I thought Elizabeth's struggles with living in the west were humorous and though I wish there was more to the romance (they do not even talk until 50% into the book) I really enjoyed her learning to be independent and to help the children she'd been entrusted with. I prefer the book to the 2009 movie. It's a really great read!

‼️ Heads Up
A child passes away and Elizabeth is grieved over it. The grief is described and I cried a bit. He was such a sweet little boy.
