Review: Romance Wrapped in Mystery
I may have pulled an all-nighter to finish this one. It was that good.
Still Star-crossed is a continuation of Romeo and Juliet. The book opens a few days after the tragic events of the play where tempers are still short and blood still boiling. It’s easy to shake hands and promise peace but harder to follow through, as Verona is discovering. To really unify the two warring families, the Prince decides that Benvolio, the oldest male heir to the Montages still living, and Roseline, the oldest female heir to the Capulets, should be married, joining the families in a union that may slow the crimson tide claiming the youths of the city.
Roseline wants nothing to do with her family or the Montagues, intending to spend her days as a nun, and Benvolio blames her for the events that claimed the lives of his kin. If she had not rebuffed Romeo, none of this would have happened. But when they learn that someone may be purposefully stirring the families to war, they put aside their loathing to unmask the villain before Verona crumbles around them.
This is a true enemies to more romance with all the angst one can expect from such a pairing. The mystery of who is pulling the strings was so well written I had no inkling of who the villain was until it was revealed. I adored the romance and though I usually loath love triangles, I understood the draw of a childhood love over a rival you've been raised to hate. I was guessing until the very last moment who she would choose.
I could not put this book down and highly recommend it for anyone who loves a good mystery with their romantic angst.
